Sourdough French Toast Recipe

This delicious sourdough French toast is sure to be a big hit with your family. Tangy sourdough bread is dipped in a sweetened egg batter and fried to golden brown perfection. Top with the traditional butter and maple syrup or try some fresh fruit or even a chocolate sauce.

Ingredients

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 slices sourdough bread 1-inch thick slices bread, each cut in half crosswise creating 8 total pieces

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, honey, vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt. Transfer the mixture to a shallow baking dish.
  • Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon butter before each batch.
  • Dunk the bread slices into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides of the bread are well coated. Transfer to the hot skillet and cook over medium heat until golden brown on each side, approximately 2-3 minutes.
  • Repeat process with the remaining pieces of bread.
  • Drizzle with butter and syrup and serve immediately!

Notes

  • Use your favorite plant based milk like oat or almond milk and butter for a dairy free option.
  • You can sub agave or maple syrup for the honey or sugar.
  • Sourdough is my favorite bread for this, but any type of  bread will work as long as it's sturdy.
