There is no sweeter, juicier, more delectable sauce for your pancakes than mulberry sauce! If you have gotten your hands on these berries, you can quickly and easily create a sweet sauce that no one will forget. Made with only 3 ingredients and done in minutes!
Why I Love This Recipe
If I had a fridge filled with sweet and savory sauces to enjoy, I would be in heaven. Which is why I was so giddy to see that our mulberry trees were ripe with succulent berries this year. Mulberry sauce is the best and here's why!
- It is the sweetest berry sauce you will ever taste.
- Done in just a few minutes and with 3 easy ingredients.
- It tastes great on a variety of foods such as ice cream, waffles and pancakes.
Recipe Ingredients
Fresh mulberries - If you have mulberry trees, pick them fresh, remove the stems and wash them well a couple times before turning them into a sauce.
Granulated sugar - Cater the amount of sugar to your liking. For a sweeter sauce, increase the amount used in the recipe to 3/4 cup. For a less sweet sauce, use just a couple tablespoons.
Cornstarch - The more corn starch you use, the thicker the mixture will be.
How To Make Mulberry Sauce
Step 1
Wash mulberries thoroughly and add to a medium bowl. Sprinkle with the sugar and let sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.
Combine the cornstarch and water in a small bowl and whisk until smooth.
Step 2
Transfer to a medium saucepan and set to medium-high heat. Stir in the cornstarch slurry. Once the mixture begins to boil, reduce to medium-low heat and let simmer for 5 minutes or until desired consistency has been reached.
Step 3
Remove from heat and drizzle over pancakes or let cool and store in an airtight container in the fridge.
Recipe Notes
- Give this sauce even more of a flavor boost by adding a bit of lemon juice and/or lemon zest.
- A teaspoon of vanilla extract would be a nice complement to this mixture.
- One downside of handling mulberries is that their deep purple color can stain skin and clothing. Use latex gloves in order to avoid having stained fingers for days.
What To Do With Mulberry Compote
- The best way to use mulberry syrup in my opinion is for a topping on pancakes or waffles
- Add as a filling to crepes
- Pour mulberry preserves over a block of cream cheese and serve with crackers
- Drizzle over your next cheesecake
- Pouring it over vanilla ice cream is a great way to transform this sweet sauce into a dessert
How To Freeze Mulberries
Place mulberries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper in a single layer. Place in the freezer for 1 hour to do a flash freeze.
Remove from freezer and transfer to a gallon ziploc bag. Seal tightly and freeze for up to 4 months for best results.
Mulberries vs Blackberries
Blackberries come from a perennial bush and have a sweet and tart flavor. Mulberries come from the mulberry tree, they are very juicy and sweet with a more delicate flavor and are smaller in size than blackberries.

Heather
How do you preserve the sauce in bottles for Christmas presents? It tends to go off quickly unlike jam.
Megan Porta
Hi Heather! I'd create a simple water bath and run the jars through that process. That will extend the shelf life so you can give this as gifts. I hope that helps!
