This easy peach pancake sauce combines fresh peaches, brown sugar, maple syrup and cinnamon to create a warm, buttery breakfast topping in just 15 minutes. It is sweet, summery and so delicious spooned over a stack of fluffy pancakes.

I absolutely love peaches because there are so many delicious ways to use them! And what better way to enjoy them than at the breakfast table? My teenage boys absolutely devoured this sauce slathered over pancakes. I heard so many “Mmmmm”s and “Ohhhhh”s and it made my mom heart so very happy.

This will be a peach season staple in our family. It is also delicious served over waffles, French toast, oatmeal or even vanilla ice cream.

    Why This Recipe Works

    • It is ready in 15 minutes. The peaches soften quickly on the stove, making this an easy addition to breakfast or brunch.
    • Fresh peaches are the star. Brown sugar, maple syrup and cinnamon enhance their natural sweetness without overpowering them.
    • The sauce is thick without being heavy. A small amount of cornstarch turns the peach juices into a buttery sauce that clings perfectly to a stack of pancakes.
    • It is delicious beyond pancakes. Use it as a topping for waffles, French toast, oatmeal, yogurt or vanilla ice cream.
    • Frozen peaches work, too. You can enjoy this easy peach sauce even when fresh peaches are not in season.

    Recipe Ingredients

Ingredients for peach pancake sauce on a white marble countertop.
    • Butter: Salted butter creates a rich base for the sauce. If you use unsalted butter, add an extra small pinch of salt.
    • Peaches: Use ripe peaches that are still slightly firm. You will need approximately 2 cups of peeled, chopped peaches. Fresh or frozen peaches both work.
    • Brown sugar: Brown sugar adds sweetness along with a subtle caramel flavor that pairs especially well with peaches.
    • Maple syrup: Use pure maple syrup for the best flavor. It gives the sauce a warm, breakfast-inspired sweetness.
    • Cinnamon: Just enough cinnamon is added to complement the fruit without covering up the fresh peach flavor.
    • Salt: A pinch of salt balances the sweetness and makes all the other flavors pop.
    • Cornstarch and water: Combining these two ingredients creates a slurry that thickens the peach juices into a smooth sauce.
    • Vanilla extract: Stir the vanilla in after cooking to preserve its flavor.

    How To Peel Peaches

For this small batch, the easiest method is to remove the skin with a vegetable peeler or sharp paring knife. If your peaches are very ripe, the skin may pull away easily with your fingers.

Peeling the peaches is optional, so feel free to skip this step if you don’t mind a little extra texture in the finished sauce.

How To Make Peach Pancake Sauce

Ingredients for peach sauce in a saucepan.
    1. Melt the butter. Melt 3 tablespoons salted butter in a medium skillet over medium heat.
    2. Add the peaches. Add 2 cups peeled and chopped peaches, 1/4 cup packed brown sugar, 2 tablespoons maple syrup, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and a pinch of salt.
Peach sauce thickened in a saucepan.
    1. Cook the peaches. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the peaches are tender and have released some of their juices.
    2. Make the slurry. In a small bowl, stir together 1 teaspoon cornstarch and 1 tablespoon water until completely smooth.
    3. Thicken the sauce. Pour the slurry into the skillet and stir well. Simmer for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce is glossy and thick enough to coat the back of a spoon but still pours easily.
    1. Add the vanilla. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract.
    2. Cool and serve. Allow the sauce to cool for a few minutes before spooning it generously over pancakes.
Mason jar of peach sauce with a spoon inside and peach nearby.

    Recipe Notes

    • For the best texture, use peaches that are ripe but still slightly firm. Very soft peaches will break down faster and create a smoother, more compote-like topping.
    • Measure the peaches after peeling, pitting and chopping them. Aim for approximately 2 cups. Since peaches vary considerably in size, you may need more than two.
    • Peeling the peaches creates the smoothest sauce, but it is not required. Feel free to leave the skins on if you do not mind the added texture.
    • The sauce will continue to thicken slightly as it cools.
    • If you prefer a thinner peach syrup, omit the cornstarch slurry. You can also thin the finished sauce by stirring in water 1 teaspoon at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.
    • Cut the peaches into similarly sized pieces so they cook evenly.

    Can I Use Frozen Peaches?

Absolutely! There is no need to wait for peach season to make this sauce. Add frozen peaches directly to the skillet without thawing them first.

Frozen peaches release a little more liquid and take longer to soften, so plan for approximately 2 to 3 additional minutes of cooking time. Let the texture of the peaches be your guide. If the slices are large, allow them to soften in the skillet for a few minutes, then use a spoon or spatula to break them into smaller pieces.

    Easy Variations

This sauce is delicious exactly as it is, but there are so many fun ways to make it your own:

    • Add more cozy flavor. Include a pinch of nutmeg, ginger or cardamom along with the cinnamon.
    • Bring out the maple flavor. Replace 1 tablespoon of brown sugar with an extra tablespoon of maple syrup.
    • Add more summer fruit. Toss in a handful of blueberries or raspberries during the final few minutes of cooking.
    • Brighten it up. Stir in 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice along with the vanilla.
    • Make it smooth and saucy. Cook the peaches for a few extra minutes, then gently mash them with the back of a spoon.
    • Give it a little crunch. Sprinkle toasted pecans or walnuts over the top just before serving.

What To Serve With Peach Sauce

This warm peach topping is delicious spooned over:

    • Pancakes
    • Waffles
    • French toast
    • Crepes
    • Oatmeal
    • Yogurt
    • Biscuits
    • Pound cake
    • Cheesecake
    • Vanilla ice cream

For an easy breakfast, serve it over Greek yogurt pancakes or your favorite classic pancake recipe. It would also be a delicious topping for pancakes made with evaporated milk.

How To Store Peach Pancake Sauce

If your family doesn’t devour every last spoonful, let the sauce cool completely and transfer it to an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Reheat individual servings in the microwave in 15-second bursts, stirring after each one. For a larger batch, warm it in a saucepan over low heat, stirring often. The sauce will thicken as it sits, so add a splash of water if needed to loosen it back up.

    Can You Freeze Peach Sauce?

Yes! Once the sauce has cooled completely, transfer it to a freezer-safe container, leaving a little room at the top for expansion. Freeze it for up to 3 months.

Let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight, then warm it gently on the stove or in the microwave. The peaches may be a little softer after freezing, but it will still taste delicious spooned over a warm stack of pancakes.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do peaches need to be peeled for peach sauce?

No, peeling the peaches is optional. Removing the skins gives the finished sauce a softer, smoother texture, but leaving them on saves time and adds a little color and texture.

How do you thicken peach sauce?

A slurry made with cornstarch and cold water thickens the juices released by the peaches. Always mix the cornstarch with water before adding it to the hot skillet to prevent lumps.

Why is my peach sauce too thick?

Peach sauce continues to thicken as it cools. Stir in water 1 teaspoon at a time until it reaches your preferred consistency.

Why is my peach sauce watery?

The peaches may have released more juice than expected, especially if you used frozen fruit. Let the sauce simmer for another minute or two first.

If it is still too thin, combine 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch with 1 teaspoon cold water. Stir the slurry into the sauce and simmer for 1 additional minute.

Can I make peach pancake sauce ahead of time?

Yes. Prepare the sauce up to 5 days in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Warm it gently just before serving, adding a splash of water if needed.
