Overnight oats are an easy and delicious way to start your day. And these banana and blueberry oats are utterly irresistible. They’re great for meal prep or as an easy breakfast when you have overnight guests. Make a batch the night before and set out a toppings bar in the morning!
Why I Love This Recipe
Anytime I have extra blueberries sitting around, I make this delicious and deliciously simple blueberry banana overnight oats. I always have bananas sitting around. Just a few minutes prep, and the next day, breakfast is ready.
The blueberry and banana combo is such a great flavor. And the best part? My boys absolutely devour these, both in the morning and as an afternoon snack when they need something filling. And the added yogurt gives them a burst of extra protein.
These overnight oats are also a great breakfast option when guests are over. Everyone loves choosing their own toppings and add-ins to create their own style. Plus, they’re great for meal prep and last almost a week in the fridge!
- Less than 5 minutes to prep the night before
- In the morning, breakfast is served!
- Great use for fresh blueberries
- My boys absolutely devour this easy breakfast - something about the banana + blueberry combo is irresistible (I have to say I agree!)
- Great way to keep breakfast time simple when guests are over (let them adjust to their liking. Plus, you get to sleep in a bit in the morning!)
Recipe Ingredients
This easy recipe uses wholesome, simple ingredients that are probably already in your kitchen!
Milk - any variety milk of your choice will work from whole milk to oat milk
Oats - use rolled oats for best results
Yogurt - Greek or plain yogurt. Go with a flavored variety for an easy way to add extra flavor
Blueberries - fresh or frozen work great
Banana - You don’t have to use super ripe, overly sweet bananas - any banana on the ripeness spectrum works great
Sweetener - Use honey, agave nectar, or pure maple syrup to sweeten the oats a little.
How to Make Banana and Blueberry Overnight Oats
One of my favorite things about this blueberry overnight oats recipe s how easy it is to make! The other is the great flavor.
Step 1
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
Step 2
Transfer to a mason jar and seal tightly.
Step 3
Place in the refrigerator overnight.
Top with an extra layer of blueberries and extra toppings just before serving.
Recipe Notes
- Leave a little extra space in the jar so the oats have some space to expand overnight.
- Don’t mix the oats and berries too forcefully. You don’t want the berries breaking too much, unless you do.
- Use old-fashioned oats or rolled oats instead of quick-cook oats or steel cut oats for the best texture.
- Fresh or frozen blueberries can be used to make these overnight oats.
- Use a non-dairy milk and maple syrup or agave nectar to make this recipe vegan.
- Add a little vanilla extract for a burst of flavor.
How to Serve Banana Blueberry Overnight Oats
This overnight oat recipe makes for the perfect grab-and-go weekly meal prep breakfast weekly meal prep option for busy mornings.
You can also serve it as part of a complete breakfast with some delicious pancakes or rich, olive oil scrambled eggs and billionaire bacon. Or set out the overnight oats with a toppings bar for everyone to choose their own. See below for some great ideas!
Toppings For Overnight Oats
Use your favorite mix-ins to add a personal touch to your oats. The options are almost limitless. These are just a few of my favorite additions to sprinkle on top of the oats.
- Lots more fresh fruits and berries
- Crunchy or creamy peanut butter, almond butter, or other nut butters
- Unsweetened coconut flakes
- Organic raisins or other dried fruits
- Nuts - crushed cashews, peanuts, or almonds are great add-ins to your overnight oats
- Seeds - sunflower seeds, organic pumpkin seeds, organic chia seeds or flax seed, etc
- Just a hint of organic ground cinnamon or nutmeg
How to Store Overnight Oats
Store prepared overnight oats in a well-sealed mason jar or other airtight container in the coldest part of your refrigerator. (That’s usually in the back of the fridge.)
How Long Do Overnight Oats Last?
These overnight oats can be stored for up to 5 days. That’s a whole week of easy breakfast meal prep done in just a few minutes! Make sure the oats are in a well-sealed airtight container or jar, and keep them in the coldest part of your refrigerator
Can You Reheat Oatmeal
You can reheat oatmeal in the microwave or on the stovetop. Add a little extra milk or water to thin out the oatmeal a little before reheating.
In the microwave - Add the oatmeal and extra liquid to a microwave safe dish and stir to combine. Heat on high for one minute and stir again. The heat on high for 30-second intervals until heated through.
On the stovetop - Add oatmeal to a small pan with a little extra liquid. Stir and heat over medium heat, stirring often, until warmed to your liking.
How To Make Creamy Oatmeal
My family also loves cozy, creamy oats and this creamy oatmeal recipe makes the dreamiest, creamiest oatmeal you'll ever eat.
Use whichever variety of milk you have on hand, but don't skimp on the liquids! It might seem like you're adding a lot of liquid, but you'll want to have enough liquid in the mix. You'll want to aim for 2 part oats to 5 part liquids.
How To Thicken Oatmeal
If you like your cooked oatmeal on the thicker side, try removing it from the heat and letting it sit for 10 minutes. If this doesn't do the trick, consider adding any of the following to the pan and cooking for 5 minutes on medium heat until you get to your desired consistency.
- Applesauce
- Mashed banana
- Peanut butter
- Flax meal
- Oat Flour
Cherries vs Blueberries
Two of my top fruits are fresh cherries and sweet blueberries. And while the two are similar in B vitamins, carbs, fiber, and protein value, there are some other subtle differences. Other than their amazing flavors.
Cherries are a better source of Vitamin A and C, while blueberries have more Vitamins E and K. Cherries only have a small amount of those two vitamins. Vitamin A promotes a healthy immune system and general organ function. Vitamin E helps strengthen bones and protect cells from free radicals.
My non-professional, non-medical, unsolicited opinion? For maximum health benefits and flavor, eat them together! Your tummy and tongue will thank you!
Substitute for Blueberries
You can switch things up by replacing the blueberries with any of the following options or adding them along with the blueberries
- Acai Berries
- Raspberries or Black Raspberries
- Blackberries
- Strawberries
- Pitted cherries - red cherries are a little sweeter and black cherries are sweet and tart
- Cranberries - if you like things a little tart
- Mulberries and wineberries are also great options if you enjoy foraging berries in season. Check Google to see if they grow wild near you!
