Recipe Ingredients
- Eggs
- Milk - Regular milk replaced with a non-dairy milk variety like oat or soy milk for dairy-free French toast when the butter is also replaced with a dairy free alternative.
- Sugar - You can replace the sugar with all honey or vice versa.
- Honey - You can replace the honey with all sugar or vice versa. You can also substitute agave or even maple syrup for the honey.
- Vanilla extract - Flavoring extracts are very concentrated, so be careful not to use too much. You could also try a little almond extract for something different.
- Ground cinnamon - You can also try a little fresh ground nutmeg along with the cinnamon for extra flavor.
- Sea salt - You might choose to omit this if you are using salted butter.
- Butter - Salted or unsalted butter will both work for this recipe. If you are using salted butter, you might opt to skip adding the extra salt from the recipe.

What is Sourdough Bread?
Sourdough bread is made by fermenting dough using lactic acid bacteria and yeast. The lactic acid created from fermentation distributes a slightly sour taste throughout the dough that gives the finished, baked bread a distinct tangy flavor.
How to Prep Sourdough French Toast Ahead of Time
- Prepare the egg batter, as well as any toppings, the night before.
- Cover the batter with plastic wrap or place in a small mason jar and refrigerate.
- Let the batter sit at room temperature for 20 minutes before cooking.
-or- - Cook the French toast and allow it to cool completely.
- When it’s cooled, wrap it tightly or place in a zip top bag and refrigerate.
- Reheat in the morning per instructions below.
Recipe Notes
- Use your favorite plant based milk like oat or almond milk and butter for a dairy free option.
- You can sub agave or maple syrup for the honey or sugar.
- Sourdough is my favorite bread for this, but any type of bread will work as long as it's sturdy.
Tips & Tricks
- You can use half milk and half heavy cream for an even more decadent result.
- Be sure to dredge your bread fully in the egg mixture to completely coat the bread.
- Allow excess batter to drip from the bread before transferring it to the hot pan.
- Don’t mess with the toast too much. Look for the steam coming from under the toast as an indicator it’s time to flip or it’s done and ready.
French Toast Toppings
The obvious topping for French toast is some softened butter and a drizzle of maple syrup. But here are some of my top choices for the best toppings for a truly delicious breakfast treat.
- Fresh berries
- Fruit slices
- Fruit pie filling
- Caramel sauce
- Chocolate sauce
- Powdered sugar
- Blueberry maple syrup, or other flavored or infused syrup
How to Store Leftover Sourdough French Toast
Allow any leftover French toast to cool fully before attempting to refrigerate them. I like to do this on a wire rack. Condensation will absolutely ruin a good piece of French toast.
Stored properly in an airtight container or sealed freezer bag, these will be at their best in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
How To Freeze French Toast
- Allow the French toast to cool completely.
- Cut some parchment paper or wax paper into squares and place a square between each piece so the slices of bread don’t stick together when freezing.
- Place the French toast in a freezer safe ziplock bag or container.
- Stored properly, the French toast will be good for 2 months.
Can You Freeze French Toast Batter
Yes! You can freeze French toast egg batter! Put the prepared egg and milk mixture in a freezer safe bag or jar. Leave a little space for expansion. Frozen egg batter will be good for up to 3 months.
Thaw frozen French toast batter in the refrigerator. Do not attempt to microwave it or you might end up with cinnamon vanilla scrambled eggs!
How to Reheat French Toast
You can reheat French toast in the microwave or in your regular old toaster or toaster oven! My preferred method is the toaster.
- To reheat in the microwave, place 2 to 3 pieces of French toast in a single layer on a plate with a paper towel under and over them. Heat in 30 second increments, checking every thirty seconds.
- If you reheat them in the toaster, don’t leave them in too long.
