Ingredients for Homemade Maple Breakfast Sausages
This amazing tasting homemade breakfast sausage recipe only calls for 2 simple ingredients plus the spice mixture!

Ground pork - Use any variety of high quality ground pork (mild, spicy, etc).
Maple syrup - For the perfect amount of sweetness and flavor to the finished product, definitely go with real maple syrup.
Seasonings - Salt, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and paprika.
Olive oil - For frying the sausage patties.
How to Make Maple Breakfast Sausage
This delicious recipe comes together quickly and easily.
Step 1
Combine all the ingredients except the olive oil in a large bowl. Mix well to combine.
Use your hands to form 3-inch patties and place them on a plate or a piece of parchment paper as you go until you’ve used all the mix.

Step 2
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium to medium-high heat.
Add the patties to the hot skillet in a single layer (you’ll have to do this in batches).

Step 3
Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until patties are golden brown and cooked through. Use a meat thermometer to measure the internal temperature of 165 degrees.
Place cooked sausage on some paper towels for the easiest way to get the extra grease.
How to Prep Maple Breaskfast Sausage Ahead of Time
- The best way to prep ahead is to make the sausage patties in their entirety and store covered in the fridge.
- When ready to serve, warm in a skillet over medium heat for 3 minutes, or until warmed through. Alternatively, you can heat the patties in the microwave as needed.
OR - Combine all ingredients and store covered in the fridge until ready to create patties and bake.
Recipe Notes & Tips
- Try subbing smoked paprika for the regular to get a smokier flavor.
- Play around with the seasonings if you like. Try adding some fresh herbs like ground sage, Italian seasoning, or crushed fennel seed in the mix.
- You can use mild or spicy ground pork.
- Add spice to the sausage mixture by adding red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, or use a spicy maple syrup or hot honey.

Italian Sausage vs Breakfast Sausage
Let’s start this section by saying there’s nothing wrong with some Italian link sausage as a great option for breakfast meat.
Italian sausage has a stronger presence of fennel, fresh garlic, and red pepper flakes. Breakfast sausage usually relies on a heavier flavor of sage sweetened with maple syrup.
Both breakfast sausage and Italian sausages now come in mild or spicy flavors.
Maple Syrup Substitute
Honestly, nothing beats the taste of pure maple syrup. But if you’re looking to switch things up a bit, you can use honey or agave nectar. They both have a similar texture and sweetness, but lack the distinct flavor that comes with maple syrup. I don’t really recommend subbing pancake syrup for this sausage recipe.

How To Store Leftover Breakfast Sausage
Allow the cooked sausage patties to cool completely before storing for refrigeration or freezing.
See the sections below for specific refrigerating and freezing tips.
How Long Does Breakfast Sausage Last In The Fridge
Properly stored in the refrigerator in a sealed storage bag or airtight container, cooked breakfast sausage patties will be good for 3-4 days
How Long Does Breakfast Sausage Last In The Freezer
You can freeze the cooked sausage for 2-3 months in a freezer safe storage bag.
I like to freeze the patties on a baking sheet first, then transfer them to the storage bag so they don’t stick together when freezing. You can also place a square of parchment between them before freezing.
How to Reheat Leftover Pork Sausage Patties
Reheat leftover sausage in the microwave, air fryer, or on the stove.
Microwave - place sausage patties on a microwave safe dish and heat on high for 1.5 minutes. Flip over and heat again for 1 minute.
Air Fryer - Preheat your air fryer to 400 and heat the sausage patties for 5-7 minutes or until heated through.
Stovetop - place sausage in a skillet and heat over medium or medium high heat for 4-5 minutes, flipping once halfway through.
