Why I Love This Avocado Toast

Over the past year I have come to absolutely love avocado toast. Which is kind of funny because I was so late trying this tasty trend. What I love most about it is how versatile this simple breakfast can be. And I have tried so many variations.

But I think the one that surprised me most was this simple avocado toast with a drizzle of honey and red pepper flakes. The hint of sweetness of the hot honey goes so well with the creamy coolness of the avocado creating a complex flavor you're sure to love. It's my new favorite way to enjoy this easy breakfast

Eat this as is or use this recipe as a starting guide to creating your own favorite avocado toast with the loads of suggestions throughout this post. Here’s a few more reasons you’ll love this amazing breakfast

    • Honey and avocados is an unlikely flavor combination that really works!
    • It only requires a few simple ingredients and is super easy to make
    • Classic avocado toast is packed with healthy fats
    • It’s easy to add some spice and multiple toppings if you’d like
    • It's not just for breakfast. This is a great meal or snack any time of the day.

    Recipe Ingredients

You only need a few basic ingredients to make this amazing breakfast option.

Two slices of sourdough bread on a counter with an avocado and a few spices arranged around it.
    • Fresh avocado - Learn how to select perfectly ripe avocado here. Chop the avocado first so it’s easy to mash. Use the back of a fork or a potato masher.
    • Bread - Sourdough bread is my favorite to use for avocado toast but any type of  bread will work as long as it's sturdy. You can make your own sourdough or grab a loaf from the grocery store. This can also be made into a gluten free recipe by using your favorite gluten-free bread.
    • Lemon juice - Fresh lemon juice always tastes best
    • Honey - You can use raw or filtered honey. Read about the differences below.
    • Red Pepper Flakes - for a touch of heat with the honey. You can replace the chili flakes with a dash of regular black pepper.
    • Pinch of Salt - to bring out the flavors to their fullest.

How to Make Honey Avocado Toast

    Step 1

In a small bowl, mash the avocado with fork tines. Add lemon juice and salt to the avocado mash and mix well.

    Step 2

Spread half of the smashed avocado mixture on each slice of toasted bread.

    Step 3

Drizzle honey over the avocado spread, followed by a sprinkling of red pepper flakes.

Two stacked pieces of avocado toast on a cutting board, the top piece with a bite removed.

How to Prep Avocado Toast with Honey Ahead of Time

    • I do not recommend preparing the avocados until ready to eat, but if you really want to save time, mash the avocado in advance and press plastic wrap firmly over the surface so no air can get to it.
    • Place in the refrigerator immediately. Refrigerate overnight (but no longer than this).

    Avocado Toast Recipe Notes

    • Hot, spicy honey is a great replacement for regular honey to spice things up even more and give your morning avo toast a kick. Hot pepper jelly or jalapeno jelly also work great on their own or mixed with the honey.
    • Black pepper, cayenne pepper, or even hot sauce can be used as a replacement for or along with the red pepper flakes.
    • When spreading the mashed avocado over the bread slices, place a heaping pile in the center of the piece of bread and spread from the center all the way to the outer edges to ensure even distribution.
    • Once an avocado has been opened, it’s only good for a few days. See tips below on how to keep avocado fresh longer.
    • If you have leftover avocado toast, add lunch meat and turn it into a sandwich.
    • You can make this recipe gluten free simply by using gluten free pieces of toast.

    Filtered Honey vs Raw Honey

The main difference between raw, unpasteurized honey and filtered, pasteurized honey lies in the methods in which they are processed.

Pasteurized or "regular honey" undergoes a specific high heat treatment and filtration to remove some of the yeast compounds present. Unpasteurized honey is extracted from the hive and undergoes only a mild heating and minimal processing. This allows the raw honey to retain all the natural enzymes, pollen, and benefits the bees and flowers have provided. Raw honey is as close to its natural state as possible.

Raw honey is not “uncooked”. It’s safe to eat and retains the many nutrients that heating and pasteurization remove from the honey.

Unpasteurized honey tends to have a more pronounced and distinct flavor profile, reflecting the specific flower from which the bees collected nectar. Pasteurized honey, due to the heating process, may have a milder flavor and aroma.

Tips & Tricks for Keeping Avocado Fresh

    • Avocados should be stored at room temperature. Only put avocado in the fridge if it is getting overly ripe or if you are trying to extend its shelf life and slow the ripening process.
    • Dice the avocado in the shell and use a spoon to scoop it into a bowl before mashing.
    • Place plastic wrap directly on the mashed avocado and smooth it over with your hand to minimize the amount of air getting in.
    • Use an extra squeeze of fresh lemon juice or lime juice to help prevent oxidation

    Avocado Toast Toppings

These are just a few of my favorite ways to take this basic recipe to the next level. You can find loads more great options in my How to Season Avocado Toast post.

    • Roasted tomato or vegetables
    • Roasted peppers or chili peppers
    • Crumbled crispy bacon pieces
    • Bruschetta or Pico de Gallo
    • Poached or fried egg for "avocado egg toast"
    • Diced hard-boiled eggs
    • Smoked salmon or lox
    • Feta cheese or goat cheese
    • An extra drizzle of olive oil or balsamic glaze
    • Fresh cilantro, fresh basil, or other herbs
    • Everything bagel seasoning

    How to Store Leftover Avocado

Leftover mashed avocado should be refrigerated in an airtight container immediately. Try to leave as little space for air as possible in the container, this will help delay the avocado turning brown due to oxidation.

    Sourdough vs Whole Wheat Bread

Both sourdough and whole wheat toast will work great with this recipe. But I really prefer sourdough as my choice of bread.

Sourdough is considered a healthier alternative to even whole wheat bread because your body absorbs more of its nutrients.

The lower levels of phytic acid make it more digestible and there are beneficial prebiotics and vitamins and minerals present in sourdough breads that are lacking in other types.

Plus, I just think the tangy flavors of sourdough taste better!

How to Toast Sourdough Bread in the Oven

You can toast sourdough bread in the oven at 400 degrees F, in a toaster oven, under the broiler, or even on a skillet or grill top. Lightly brush the slice of sourdough with some olive oil. Then toast for 2-3 minutes on each side until lightly golden brown and slightly crisp.

    Protein in Avocado Toast

Avocado Toast on sourdough bread will come out to about 8 grams of protein per serving.

You can add extra protein to your avocado toast by adding lox, bacon crumbles, eggs, or even beans.
